I designed a new mural for the Englewood Nature Playspace and Outdoor Classroom, a community garden catty corner to my own garden, and a space I've been involved with for 20 years. Over multiple growing seasons, beginning in 2020, I documented my garden in a garden log: when plants flowered; new things I planted; what I propagated; birds and insects that I identified. These garden logs became the source material for the visuals in the new mural: every single flower, tree, bird, and insect was documented on this exact block of the neighborhood, and most of the reference photos I took myself, in my own garden, or in this one. The yuccas, cherry tree, night hawk, swallowtail butterfly, and the rest, were all documented in my garden logs.
In the spirit of the hands-on learning emphasis in the garden, I included small cut-away window with rotating backgrounds that reveal different frames; in the image above, the bud, flower, and seeds of a zinnia.
